Maintaining Appropriate Professional Boundaries With Patients: Legal, Ethical, And Clinical Issues Facing Social Workers In Health Care

Setting appropriate boundaries is frequently a challenging ethical issue for social workers. They and other mental health practitioners are now required by the New York State Board of Regents to take - as part of their required continuing education - a three-hour credit course on the maintenance of professional boundaries with patients.

This two-part workshop addressed the legal ethical and issues involved in maintaining professional boundaries and the implications for direct practice with patients and their families and the required clinical skills. The panelists included Rick Reamer, Judy Dobrof, Martha Sullivan, and Susan Matorin. Feedback from the participants was very positive. In the words of one social worker:

"This was a really engaging workshop series, absolutely touching the heart of what we do."

We were pleased to co-sponsor this event with the Social Work Section of the New York Academy of Medicine and to provide continuing education hours to the social workers in attendance. For more information on upcoming workshops log onto this website.
